Ellen's Bio
My Background: I studied sociology and gerontology at Miami University (OH) - bachelors and masters level - and began my career as a senior center director in Miamisburg, OH. As a consultant in the 1990's, I worked with senior centers nation-wide on strategies for improving the impact of their newsletters and other printed media, and developing effective promotional strategies. Throughout this period, I frequently worked with my husband, Doug (an architect) on senior center design and renovation projects. In 2006 we launched Lifespan Design Studio, an architectural/consulting firm focusing on universal/lifespan design. Based in Lebanon, OH, we serve senior centers throughout the country. We have been active members of NCOA/NISC for nearly twenty years, and are frequent speakers at state and national conferences of aging services professionals.
My Work History: Miamisburg Senior Center, Miamisburg, OH; NewsWorthy Publications, Phoenix, MD; Colimore Gallow Architects, Baltimore, MD; Lifespan Design Studio, Lebanon, OH My Interests: I am fascinated with the way that the constructed environment supports or compromises the quality of life for people at all stages in life. I'd like be part of making universal design become the new "green." The changes that we are witnessing in senior centers today are exciting and challenging. Helping to envision new (or modify existing) facilities to address emerging needs and strategies is a perfect "marriage" of my dual-path career in senior centers and universal design.
